Construction learners see the Bennett-fit of work experience

Post 16 learners from Trinity Solutions have been given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with building firm AJ Bennett LTD.

Focussing on their aspirations, learners were paired with skilled mentors across multiple trades including joiners, electricians, and bricklayers. Not only did learners experience first-hand the reality of working on a building site, they developed a working routine, a range of transferable skills including problem solving, communication, team work and gained experience in the use of hand tools and equipment including nail guns, formers and drills. One of the learners commented “I have really enjoyed my placement on site, I have learnt how to fit windows and install wood panelling using a nail gun, it has been a good opportunity to learn and will help me get a job” another commented “the placement has given me the chance to apply the skills and knowledge I have learnt in the classroom into the world of work”.

The partnership with AJ Bennett LTD extends beyond work placement opportunities, Jeff Colman, Site Manager supported learners by delivering an information session in the classroom as part of IAG. The session saw students read technical drawings, discuss career pathways and explore self-employment as an option.

Managing Director, Frank Huntley commented ‘We have been impressed with the attitude of the learners onsite and their work ethic – we believe it is important that we invest in our future workforce as it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit the right staff’.
