From Classroom to Production Line: Learners Explore Nissan's Sunderland Plant

Motor Vehicle learners recently had the exciting opportunity to visit Nissan in Sunderland for an afternoon of learning and exploration.

During the visit, learners were given an insight into the world of automotive manufacturing, seeing first-hand how vehicles are built on a large-scale production line.

Maths in 3D

In Maths, we have been exploring mathematical concepts using physical 3D shapes to bring learning to life. By handling and examining these models, learners have been able to better understand how to calculate volume, surface area, and perimeter in a practical and engaging way.

Kahoot! for Maths

To support revision in the run up to assessments, learners have been using Kahoot as an engaging way to help learners recall and practise key maths topics. Through regular quizzes, we have been revisiting important skills such as times tables, simple division, and calculating perimeter.

Exploring Futures: NE1 Can Allied Health Workshop

On Wednesday 4th March, learners from Health and Social Care attended the Vermont Hotel to take part in the NE1 Can Allied Health Workshop. The workshop featured a range of NHS roles—including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and podiatry—with professionals coming together to speak to learners and share what a typical day in their role looks like.

Inspiring Futures: Visit to Hedley’s College

Learners from Health and Social Care visited Hedley’s College in Forest Hall on Thursday 12th March. During the visit, our learners were introduced to the learners who attend the college, and they watched a video explaining how and why Percy Hedley was established, as well as the positive impact it has on the lives of its learners. This included inspiring opportunities such as adaptive surfing and participation in police cadets.

In forest school, learners worked together to make paracord bracelets, carefully weaving the cord to create their own colourful and practical accessories. They also explored woodcraft by using pieces of tree trunks to create small wooden accessories, developing their creativity while learning about natural materials.

A new cohort of learners arrived at Forest School bundled in waterproofs, greeted by dripping trees and muddy paths. Instead of retreating, they leaned in. Sparks soon flew as they learnt how to safely build and light a fire, cheering when the first flames caught despite the damp air.

Before Christmas, we had the opportunity to attend the NE1 Can event focussing on Nursing. We spoke with Nurses, Health and Care assistants, Sisters, Matrons, and Trainers from various nursing departments, including Children’s Care, Adult Care, Special Needs, Mental Health, and specialties such as Ear, Nose, and Throat.

Football, Friendship, and Fair Play

Every other Wednesday afternoon, learners get the opportunity to go to Soccer World for an extra-curricular football session that lasts an hour and a half but feels like only minutes. Learners rush onto the pitch with smiles, ready to play, learn, and enjoy the game together. From the first whistle, teamwork takes centre stage—players pass the ball, communicate clearly, and encourage one another after every move.

Engineering and Electronics in Motor Vehicles

They’ve been following detailed instructions to build a fully functioning engine using a Meccano-style kit, giving them a practical insight into how mechanical components work together. Before half term, we celebrated excellent attendance with a special trip to Fayre Play at The Gate for 20 learners who achieved 100% attendance. The experience was full of fun and laughter, although some learners didn’t believe everything was quite fair, especially when it came to point scoring! It was a great way to reward their commitment and consistency with a memorable outing.

This October, English learners embraced the spooky season with a focus on zombies, apocalypse preppers, and Halloween-themed writing tasks. In class, learners read texts exploring the traits and behaviours of zombies—what they eat, what draws them in, and what keeps them at bay. They also critically examined the phenomenon of “prepper culture,” questioning how preparing for imagined threats might negatively impact others in society.
