The rain didn’t let up, but neither did the enthusiasm.

A new cohort of learners arrived at Forest School bundled in waterproofs, greeted by dripping trees and muddy paths. Instead of retreating, they leaned in. Sparks soon flew as they learnt how to safely build and light a fire, cheering when the first flames caught despite the damp air.

Before long, simple meals were cooking over the fire, filling the woods with warmth and the smell of good food.

Throughout the session, the group explored their surroundings—spotting small animals, testing squelchy ground, and discovering where the river and tree swings are. Conversations and laughter echoed through the trees as confidence grew.

By the end of the day, everyone slowed down, swaying gently in hammocks strung between trunks, listening to the rain above them. Miserable weather or not, the 12-week journey has begun exactly as it should: connected, curious, and completely outdoors
