The Fat Ball Adventure at Forest School

It was a crisp, sunny morning at Forest School, and the learners gathered around their tutors. The forest was alive with the sounds of rustling leaves and chirping birds, but the animals were beginning to struggle with the colder weather. Ben and Paul had an idea to help them—and the learners were excited to pitch in. "Today, we're going to make fat balls for the birds and other animals," they said, smiling at the group. "These will help keep them nourished through the chilly days ahead."
The learners eagerly gathered around a wooden table, and they got given a bag of birdseed and large blocks of lard. The learners got shown how to mix the lard with the seed to make a sticky, squishy paste. They then shaped them into balls.
They then pressed a string through the middle to hang them on the trees. Some were big, others were small, but all of them were covered in seeds. When the last fat ball was hung, the learners stood back and admired their work.
When it was time to leave, the learners walked back to the minibus and asked if they could make more of them
next week and to also see what animals fed off them. And with that, the learners left knowing they had made a small but important difference for the animals who called it home.
