Embedding Maths in Motor Vehicle: Practical Learning in Action

Today in our Motor Vehicle class, we seamlessly embedded maths into a hands-on, engaging lesson that connected classroom concepts with real-world automotive applications.
Our focus was on tyre sizes and measurements. Students completed worksheets comparing different tyre specifications, converting millimetres to inches, and learning how to calculate section height using the formula:
Section Height = (Profile Percentage × Tyre Width) / 100
Using compasses, students then drew scaled representations of tyres, labelling key dimensions such as width, diameter, and sidewall height. This helped reinforce their understanding of ratios, scaling, and geometry.
By applying maths in a practical setting, learners not only developed their numeracy skills but also saw the value of accurate measurements and calculations in a professional motor vehicle context. A great example of how theory meets practice in the workshop
