English Learners Explore Life in Space

This week, English learners explored the theme of space while developing key reading, writing and communication skills. Learners learnt interesting facts about life on the International Space Station, including how astronauts exercise, recycle water, and spend their days in space.

Learners practised using conjunctions, correcting punctuation, identifying facts and opinions, and writing short responses linked to space-themed scenarios.

In response to the question "Would you live on Mars for a year?", and Entry Level learners wrote: "I would not live on Mars for a year. I think this because freezing weather makes me feel ill. Another reason is I would be lonely and I would have nobody to talk to. I would miss eating proper food and going on my bike. Some people argue it would be good because they could find aliens. I would be too scared to find aliens. Overall, I think Mars would be bad for me. My family and friends would miss me so I won't go."

Activities were carefully adapted so that Entry Level and Level 1 learners could work at their own pace, build confidence and apply English skills in a fun, real-world context.  The lesson helped learners see how clear communication is important in everyday life, work, and even in extreme environments like space.
