Frightfully Good Writing: English learners Get Creative for Halloween

This October, English learners embraced the spooky season with a focus on zombies, apocalypse preppers, and Halloween-themed writing tasks. In class, learners read texts exploring the traits and behaviours of zombies—what they eat, what draws them in, and what keeps them at bay. They also critically examined the phenomenon of “prepper culture,” questioning how preparing for imagined threats might negatively impact others in society.
Entry-level learners put their instructional writing skills to the test by crafting step-by-step guides on how to survive a zombie invasion. Meanwhile, Level 1 and 2 learners channelled their inner journalists, penning imaginative newspaper articles covering bizarre Halloween happenings. It was a fun, eerie, and educational way to develop reading, writing, and analytical skills—all while getting into the Halloween spirit!
