New roles for supply teachers

Supply teachers are embracing hands-on learning by taking on trades like bricklaying, offering a fresh and practical approach to skill-building. While it might sound unconventional, this trend is gaining momentum as teachers find that learning a trade boosts their confidence, problem-solving abilities, and patience—skills that translate well into the classroom.

For supply teachers, these hands-on experiences provide a break from the routine and an opportunity to build new skills outside of their teaching roles. As one teacher shared, bricklaying taught them the value of taking things one step at a time—an approach they now apply to their teaching methods. The process of learning and mastering a skill also enhances teamwork and communication, as teachers collaborate and share tips during workshops.
