Using ‘The Day’ in This Week’s English Lesson

This week in English, the supported internship learners explored current affairs using The Day, an online news resource designed for young people. The aim was to develop reading, discussion, and critical thinking skills through real-world topics that matter.
Learners were asked to read the article about Rachel Kelly’s new book ‘The Gift of Teenagers’ and worked on activities such as summarising content, identifying key points, and sharing their opinions. These tasks encouraged thoughtful discussion, improved vocabulary, and built confidence in expressing ideas. Which are important skills for both education and the workplace.
Using The Day helped make the English lesson more engaging and relevant, connecting classroom learning to the wider world. It also supported learners in becoming more informed, thoughtful, and active participants in everyday conversations.
