Safeguarding Advice & Guidance

Safeguarding and Child Protection
Trinity Academy Newcastle Multi Academy Trust recognises the moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all our learners. We will endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children and young people are respected and valued. We will be alert to the signs of abuse and maltreatment and will follow our procedures to ensure that learners receive effective support, protection and justice. The procedures contained in our policy apply to all staff and governors and are consistent with those of the Newcastle Safeguarding Children Partnership.

Core principles

This policy is one of a series in the school's integrated safeguarding portfolio. Our core safeguarding principles are as follows:

  • The school's responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children is of paramount importance.
  • Safer children make more successful learners.
  • Representatives of the whole school community of learners, parents, staff and governors will be involved in policy development and review.
  • Policies will be reviewed annually unless an incident or new legislation or guidance suggest the need for an interim review.

The statement and core principles demonstrate the Trust's understanding that to carry out its role effectively, it must:

  • Give priority to the welfare of the learner
  • Understand the importance of respect
  • Recognise the relationship between safety and learning
  • Value the opinions and contributions of the whole school community
  • Ensure staff are appropriately trained
  • Develop and maintain effective procedures
  • Comply with the prevailing legislation and consider prevailing guidance

Once the Trust's values are established you can then consider how they can be translated into practice through your approaches to teaching and learning.

Safeguarding Adults

Trinity Academy Multi Academy Trust recognise their role and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of our adult learners.

We work closely with other organisations using multi-agency policies and procedures, to protect and prevent abuse of adults at risk.

The procedure contained in our policy applies to all staff and governors and are consistent with those of the Newcastle adult safeguarding board.

Safeguarding Online

A 'world first' online reporting tool from The Internet Watch Foundation andChildlineaims to help children who have been groomed, or who have experienced sexual harassment and abuse online. Under 18's who want nude pictures or videos of themselves removed from the internet can now report the images through this online tool.

The Internet Watch Foundation will examine images and then try to remove them if they break the law.

To get an image removed, the child/young person needs to visit the Childline website and follow the simple steps. The Internet Watch Foundation will read all reports within one working day, from Monday to Friday. If the image is on a UK-based website it can often be removed within 2-3 hours. In other countries, it can take longer - sometimes days or weeks.

Operation Encompass:

Operation Encompass is a unique Police and Education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children and young people exposed to domestic abuse.

Operation Encompass is the reporting to schools before the start of the next school day when a child or young person has been involved or exposed to a domestic abuse incident the previous evening. The information is given in strict confidence to a school’s Key Adult to enable support to be given dependent on the needs and wishes of the child.

Operation Encompass is a Trauma-Informed and Trauma Sensitive charity. We acknowledge and understand the impact of Domestic Abuse as an Adverse Childhood Experience(ACE)

Operation Encompass mitigates against the damaged caused by exposure to Domestic Abuse and other ACE’s

Operation Next Steps

Trinity Academy has been given the opportunity to take part in a new Home Office approved project. It is being led by Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Dame Vera Baird and Northumbria Police in partnership with Barnardo’s and Operation Encompass. The project, named Operation Encompass the Next Steps, aims to form part of a wider strategy to break the cycle of Domestic Abuse through education and support.

The project will help all children in Northumbria to learn about friendships, relationships, emotions, and rules so that they can live and work together safely.

Our school will also benefit from having one of twelve School Safeguarding Liaison Officers who will:

  • Work with our teachers to deliver an age-appropriate session exploring aspects of Domestic Abuse/friendships /relationships/emotions
  • Be available in school at specified times so that children and parents can talk about issues that they may have around relationships and Domestic Abuse
