Week Summary: Checking and Replacing Brakes (Independent Work)

In the last few weeks, learners worked independently to understand the importance of brake maintenance and the steps involved in checking and replacing brake pads on a car. Understanding Brake Functionality: Learners explored the role of brake systems in vehicle safety, focusing on disc and drum brakes. They also identified signs of worn-out brake pads, such as squeaking, vibrations, and reduced stopping power.
This was achieved by observing the learners during independent Tasks:
Identifying Brake Issues: Learners practised recognising signs that brake pads need replacement.
Steps for Brake Pad Replacement: Learners reviewed the process for checking brake pads, removing the old ones, compressing the piston, and installing new pads.
Safety Checks: They independently assessed the importance of using the proper tools and following safety procedures, like securing the car with a jack and jack stands.
The lessons have emphasised the importance of regular brake maintenance and allowed learners to work through the process of checking and replacing brake pads on their own. By working independently, they gained hands-on knowledge to ensure vehicle safety and proper brake function. It was fantastic to see the learners having the confidence to engage with these tasks, and having the ability to change brakes to a competent level.
